2006 Diseño Malbec**
diseno.jpg Region Price Purchased Drank
Mendoza, Argentina $13 Gift 11/13/07
A deep, inky purple with a nose of lilac, black fruits and a bit of tobacco. The mouthfeel is thick with flavors of earth, blueberry and smoke with dark chocolate on the finish. This wine is very young and needs time to breathe. I'd open and pour into glasses at least a half hour before drinking. Initial sips right out of the bottle were tight and uninteresting. Some more time in the bottle will help.

2006 Luca Malbec***
lucamalbec.jpg Region Price Tasted Drank
Mendoza, Argentina $28 Private Tasting 3/14/08
A deep, almost opaque purple wine with a lovely bouquet of smoke, toast, pepper and black fruit that follows through on the full-bodied palate, developing into flavors of black cherry, blackberry and sweet oak. Opulent and fruit forward there is still plenty of tannins under the fruit to make this a well-balanced and age-worthy wine. Not overly complex, but still multi-layered. Quite drinkable, though a few years in the bottle will make it even better. Shows how good Malbec can be.

2006 Tapiz Malbec**
tapizmalbec.jpg Region Price Tasted Drank
Mendoza, Argentina $16 Private Tasting 3/14/08
An intense purple color with aromas of red mature fruit with a marked presence of flowers combined with touches of herbs, vanilla and smoke. The palate is medium-bodied and filled with ripe black fruit, medium tannins, low acidity and a slight vegetal/stewed character. A bit more time in the bottle will integrate the fruit and tannins, though it's perfectly drinkable now. Somewhat pricey for the quality.

2005 Dona Paula Los Cardos Malbec**
dona_cardos_malbec.jpg Region Price Purchased Drank
Mendoza, Argentina $8 @ a Restaurant 1/11/08
Red berry and blackberry, with herb and mocha flavors and nuances of vanilla and spice. Rich and smooth with a hint of mint and vanilla on the finish. The firm tannins take a while to soften, but once they do the fruit and spice integrate nicely. A pretty interesting wine for the price.

2005 Melipal Reserve Malbec**
melipalmalbec.gif Region Price Purchased Drank
Mendoza, Argentina $35 The Wine House 4/14/08
A deep purple wine with a youthful nose fill of black fruit, sweet spice, vanilla, violets and liqourice aromas. The palate is medium-bodied but packed with intensity, acidity and alcohol along with its' blackberry, clove, liquorice and oak flavors. The length is good with vanilla and spice notes rounding out the fruit. This wine definitely needs a few more years in the bottle to integrate all its' flavors. 2005 is considered a great year for this region, so hold onto this one a bit longer if you can.

2004 Terza Volta Malbec**
terzamalbec.jpg Region Price Purchased Drank
Mendoza, Argentina $15 Colorado Wine Co. 12/10/07
A deep ruby-purple wine with a lovely nose of ripe red fruits, smoke and coffee. Medium-bodied yet filled with flavors of blackberry, vanilla, chocolate and earth with a chemy, gamey, lingering finish. A little tight at first, but the soft tannins helped smooth it out fairly quickly. A powerful wine for the price.
