2006 Pra Soave Classico Superiore**
AV0892206F.jpg Region Price Purchased Date
Veneto, Italy $15 Woodland Hills Wine 12/6/08
Made from 100% Garganega, this medium-bodied, lemon-green colored wine exhibits floral, citrus, honey and green apple aromas. Unoaked but still full-flavored with ripe apple, lemon, minerals, pear and, as it warmed, notes of apricot on the crisply refreshing finish. Clean and well-balanced, with good acidity and unity of flavor. Not as deep as the 04 version, but still a lovely wine from year to year.

2005 Bertani Due Uve Bianco***

Veneto, Italy $18 @ Dinner 6/10/08
This 50/50 blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio is surprisingly good with a pale, straw color and bright aromatics of grass, elderflower, citrus and stone fruit. The palate is intense with crisp acidity, a big mouthfeel and flavors of green apple, lemon, herbs and as it warms peach fruit flavors. The finish is refreshing and lingering. A blend that brings out the best of both varietals with complexity and balance and at a pretty affordable price.

2005 Pieropan Soave Classico**

Veneto, Italy $16 Red Carpet 5/2/08
A pale, lemon-green colored wine with fragrant aromas of citrus and flowers with hints of peach and stone. The palate has refreshing acidity, nice balance and flavors of lemon, apple, lime and minerals with more peach and vanilla notes as it warms. Not a wine that's going to knock your socks off, but a nice example of Soave and a good wine to pair with a seafood dinner or just sip in the shade. Crisp and more flavorful than many Italian whites.

2004 Blason "Venc" Isonzo Bianco*

Friuli-Venezia-Giulia, Italy $10 K&L Wines 4/9/08
A 50% blend of Tocai Friulano and 50% Pinot Blanc, partially aged "sur lie" and partially in barrel. A pleasent enough wine, but there was no real discerning features on the nose or palate besides the usual green fruit and citrus notes found in most Italian white wines. Expected more aromas because of the Tocai. The mouthfeel was more lush than most due to how the Pinot Blanc was aged which added nice hints of vanilla and nuts. Still drinkable, but I wouldn't wait much longer. Not bad wine, just not enough there anymore to move up in the ratings.

2004 Pra Soave Classico Superiore***
AV0892206F.jpg Region Price Purchased Date
Veneto, Italy $14 @ The Wine House 7/25/07
Made from the local varietal Garganega, this medium bodied wine exhibits lovely floral, citrus and green apple aromas. Luscious, almost dewy on the palate, with flavors of fresh melon, citrus and tart apple, with a finish that makes you smack your lips and want more. Unoaked but still full-flavored and pleasantly rich without being too sweet. Clean and well-balanced, with refreshing acidity and minerality. One of my favorites and consistently good from year to year.

2002 Principessa Gavia Gavi**
gavia02.jpg Region Price Tasted Date
Piedmonte, Italy $14 Private Dinner 4/23/08
Pale straw hue. Clean, crisp aromas of grapefruit, pear, mineral with an herbal note. Lemony acidity drives lively, balanced flavors of green apple, pear and grapefruit with notes of stone and vanilla on the finish. Still drinking well for a 6-year-old white wine with plenty of punch and flavor left. A well-balanced effort, showing how good Gavi can be.
