This is a crisp, uncomplicated wine that should be drunk cold on a hot day. Most versions are nothing to write home about, but they are better than drinking water. Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference. Personally, I enjoy this wine as an aperitif and the better versions – especially from Oregon, the Colli region of Italy or Alsace, France – are more complex and interesting, as well as refreshing. There's not much to analyze here and the prices (from $10 – $15) usually reflect that. They are also great food wines, especially with light salads, pastas and seafood. Mostly wines to just drink up and enjoy.

WHAT TO EXPECT: A light-medium bodied wine with high acidity and green fruit (apple, pear) and citrus (lemon, lime) flavors, as well as some minerality. The versions from Alsace and California tend to have more pronounced fruit flavors (apricot, peach, honey), a bit more body and less overt acidity.

PREMIUM REGIONS: Italy (Trentino, Veneto, Fruili), France (Alsace), California, and Oregon (called Pinot Gris)
