Believe it or not, even in the 21st Century many states do not allow direct shipping from a winery to an individual buyer. If you do not happen to reside in one of the lucky reciprical states, you can taste but you can't ship it home. What's an unrepentant wine lover to do? Well, you can move to a place that allows this flagrant behavior or get involved with your local government to change the outdated laws that govern your state. To jump on the legal bandwagon, visit FREE THE GRAPES, a non-profit organization fighting to bring wine shipping laws out of the dark ages.

As it stands the following states allow you to ship your purchases home without any restrictions: Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, New Mexico, Oregon, West Virginia and Wisconson.

Those with limited direct shipping include: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, DC, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Vermont, Virginia, Washington and Wyoming. Please consult local laws or talk to the winery you're interested in buying from. They generally know the options open to you.

If you happen to live in Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Kentucky, Indiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Missouri, Montana, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, South Dakota and Utah you are seriously out of luck as direct shipping is completely prohibited. As in all things, you can take your chances, but don't be surprised if your shipment never makes it.

The distributors have a vested interest in continuing to stop direct shipping and aren't going down without a fight. Please consult FREE THE GRAPES for official information and the chance to take action by helping to change the laws.
